KIIP 사전평가: Why the Test is Tough and How to Secure Your Level

If you are an expat in South Korea, everyone tells you to “just take” the KIIP 사전평가 (pre-evaluation exam). What they don’t tell you is how much of a shock test day is.

The 사전평가 is not a casual language quiz. Your score decides exactly which level you are placed into, from Level 0 to 5 (단계 0 to 5). A high score can skip you ahead by months and save you hundreds of hours in a classroom. A low score means you start from the very beginning.

The test is hard to prepare for, but not for the reasons you might think.

Why the Test Catches Expats Off Guard

  • The tight time limit. The written test is 50 questions in 60 minutes: 48 multiple-choice plus 2 short-answer (단답형). That is barely over a minute per question, and several questions sit on long, dense reading passages. If you read slowly, you can run out of time before you reach the end.
  • It is two tests in one. The written section covers your grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. But there is also a separate oral test (구술시험). It is a short, face-to-face session of 5 questions in about 10 minutes, with two evaluators assessing five candidates at once. Korean examiners grade your speaking on the spot.
  • It tests culture, not just language. Part of the written exam checks your knowledge of Korean society (한국사회이해): history, economics, and how the government works. Even if your grammar is good, you will lose real points if you have only studied the language.

What Actually Helps You Score Higher

To score as high as you can, you need to change how you study.

  1. Build reading speed. Don’t just study vocabulary lists. Read full paragraphs under a strict timer until you can look at a passage and quickly see what it is about. On test day, speed is as important as accuracy.
  2. Master the oral test format. Examiners will ask you to read a short text aloud, answer questions about it, and reply in conversation. Practice saying your answer in a simple, fixed shape: state your point, give a reason, add an example. Three clear sentences beat one rambling answer.
